  • It is up to the patient using the insurance to have an understanding of the type of plan they have signed up for. We do not set the prices, your insurance tells us what to charge you when we log in to verify your benefits the night before your appointment.

Generally there are 3 main different types of plans: a DEDUCTIBLE plan, a DEDUCTIBLE WITH COINSURANCE plan, or a COPAY plan.

DEDUCTIBLE/HIGH DEDUCTIBLE PLAN: you will be responsible for the entire amount of the visit that your insurance has set the price for until you hit your max out of pocket/deductible. For example, if you have a $1000 deductible, and your insurance charges you $200 for an intake appointment, you pay $200 and now your deductible is balanced at $800. This continues until you "pay it off." This is subject to change depending on other doctor visits and other claims that process before ours gets processed. For example, if you went to urgent care the week prior, and that visit isn't processed until after your Amethyst visit, and you suddenly have met your deductible after you paid us the $200, you would have a credit. This is why all of our price quotes are done right before the appointment and are ESTIMATES ONLY.

COINSURANCE PLAN: Some plans charge you a "co-insurance percentage" after your deductible is paid off. So if you have a "20% co-insurance" plan: after you meet your deductible you would be responsible for 20% of the cost. For example, if you have a $1000 deductible, and you fully meet that after a $200 intake from Amethyst, your plan will then pay for 80% of the cost of the follow up, and the patient will owe 20% of the cost of the follow ups moving forward, until they hit their max out of pocket amount.

COPAY PLAN: You will have a generalist and a specialist copay, psychiatry is considered a specialty and we will always report back to you what your insurance has set for you as the specialist copay amount. For example, if your insurance tells us you have a $50 specialist copay, your appointments will be $50 each visit, for intakes and follow ups.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO KNOW FOR SURE AND GET THE BEST GUESS PRICE QUOTE PRIOR TO MY APPOINTMENT??

-CALL YOUR INSURANCE PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT AT AMETHYST AND ASK THEM WHAT TYPE OF PLAN YOU HAVE AND HOW MUCH TO EXPECT (phone number is on your insurance card). Please have them send this to you in writing to your email, so if they tell us something different you can investigate with your insurance provider.

Most insurances have a patient portal you can log into and take a look at your mental health benefits.

One last thing: Medical and Mental Health benefits can sometimes be separated on your plan. You might think you have BCBS, but you could have BCBS with a United Healthcare mental health benefits package. If you find out this to be true, please let us know prior to your appointment that you have a different mental health carve out (benefit package) so we can notate this in your chart.

Please make sure you understand what type of insurance plan you have prior to your appointment so there is no confusion about the charges on your account. Call your insurance to ask so you are 100% sure what type of plan you have.
